The Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) has announced a series of dialogues focused on key reform priorities for the interim government.
This initiative was revealed at a press briefing held at a Dhaka hotel on Thursday, where CGS’s advisory board member Dr Ali Riaz and Executive Director Zillur Rahman jointly addressed the media.
Zillur Rahman said the people of Bangladesh have many achievements but many of their achievements did not last long.
He expressed concern that the term “reform” has become more of a buzzword than a substantive goal, lacking real depth and commitment. Rahman stressed the importance of inclusive participation from all political parties and people from all walks of life in the reform process.
Dr Ali Riaz, a professor at Illinois State University in the United States, opened his remarks by remembering those who lost their lives or were deeply affected by the injustices of the Hasina-led regime.
He specifically recalled the victims of the July-August massacre, highlighting the injuries and deaths caused by the regime’s oppressive actions.
Dr Riaz criticised the previous regime for establishing an oligarchic system where a small group of elites, loyal to the government, benefited disproportionately from state resources. These elites exploited government subsidies and wielded significant financial and political power for their own advantage, he added.
He argued that the reconstruction of constitutional institutions and the decentralisation of government power across various sectors are essential to prevent the resurgence of further autocratic rule.
Dr Riaz also underscored the crucial role of the media in amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens and advocating for these necessary changes. He emphasised that a constitutional rewrite is vital to dismantling the centralised power structures that enable misuse of authority.
In conclusion, Dr Riaz stressed the importance of overcoming the culture of fear in order to establish true democracy and reflect the will of the people. He reiterated that the media, along with other sectors of society, must play a pivotal role in this transformative period.
