The owners of small and medium-sized enterprises in Khulna have called for the depoliticisation of government institutions and business chambers to tackle corruption in the sector.
The call was made in a regional consultation event organised by the Centre for Governance Studies and a Washington-based organisation, Centre for International Private Enterprises, in Khulna on Monday, said a press release on Wednesday.
The discussants said that collaboration among anti-corruption platforms, business chambers, and the government was very important to uproot corruption.
They said that the marketing of local shrimp was often hampered in the transportation phase as the highway police or traffic sergeants harassed the businessmen. To keep the authorities happy, businessmen are forced to give a large sum of money.
The SME owners said that the high dollar conversion rate, power outages, and price hikes in the market were also impacting the businesses directly.
The Bangladesh-based organisation CGS conducts research and media studies on issues of good governance, corruption, human rights, democracy, and development.
